I've long been friends with Valarie and Mike. Valarie and I worked together when I was still in a "DINK state of life". She had an adorable little girl name Tori and sometimes, as I made my way through photography classes, I would ask her model for me. As a "non-mom" at the time, I didn't have a lot of friends with children so Tori was a little trooper posing, while I fiddled with f-stops and lights and learned my craft.

The other day Valarie called and asked me if I could do some really quick headshots of Tori because she needed to submit them with her college applications. "COLLEGE" . . . I just about yelled. "IMPOSSIBLE!" . . . another high decibel shout. Time goes so fast . . . especially for us adults as we watch the children around us toddle, run, drive and then leave us for colleges near and far. My own little girl and boy will be needing headshots for college someday and I have to say, that will be a very sad day for me.

Here is Tori, once a little seven-year-old model holding a bunny, now a young woman going off to college. We did these headshots in a few minutes right in the neighborhood with some nice creamy natural light. After the shoot, Tori, Valarie and I plopped down on the floor to chat about what she'd like to do for her senior portraits. Can't wait to shoot those . . . we've got some great ideas for cool urban locations and poses.

Scary Stuff

Spiders, snakes, earthquakes, flash floods, horror movies, Godzilla, dark alleys . . . bring it on. I can take it all. However, the most frightening thing a photographer can hear is, "We need a self portrait for our bio section." Yep, that's the phrase that strikes fear in the hearts of many of us shutter bumping kind. It's intimidating and it forces you out of your comfort zone. It also makes you think about how you want others to see you (or not see you). On top of all that, it's tough to know when to shoot 'cuz you can't see your face when your shooting you. All your focus work has to be done with a stand in, to get the focus correct when you push your remote shutter release.

I've had this idea about shooting a model behind lace. It's something I saw in an old Edward Steichen portrait of Gloria Swanson and I've never forgotten it. There is something mysterious about the veil of lace and hey, veils of lace cover a lot imperfections too. BONUS!!!

So here it is, or here I am . . . don't throw any rotten tomatoes, 'kay?

Bob and Bosley

So I finished up the editing on the portrait session for Bob and Bosley and I just had to post a few of my favorite shots from the session. We got a wide range of emotion from those little pooches and to think they had no prior modeling experience (hee, hee). Ya gotta love the blue tint on Bob's fur . . . not too many male poodles could pull off that look which such style.

One of the very awesome aspects of my job is the interesting people that I get to work with. Once again combining my love of photography and dogs, I recently had the chance to do some promo shots for a funky, fun and fabulous dog trainer Cindy Scott of Dogs Etc. She needed something with a different look than the standard trainer next to dog shot, so we played with lighting and of course . . . a couple of members of her pack Bosley and Bob. Here are a couple pix from the shoot with many, many more that are just so stinking cute!!! Love ya Cindy! Bosley and Bob are definitely headed for stardom.

Christmas Portraits in July

Since I'm running a little Christmas in July (or August) promo, I thought it would be fun to show everyone in internet-land the results of one of these sessions. Now there is one more family that will not have to worry about Christmas card photos 'cuz they are all done. (aren't you jeaous)

The family lives in Pasadena so we thought it would be fun to shoot near their home. As usual I chatted with the mom about what her goal was for the session and she wanted a nice traditional family portrait outdoors with maybe a few that were not totally traditional. She also thought it would be a good idea to get the kids by themselves for Christmas cards or gifts. We talked about what they would wear and she picked some nice coordinating outfits that all worked well with a special dress that "grandma' had given to her little girl. I also wound up getting a few shots of each child individually (which is my favorite kind of shooting) and I'm pretty sure the family will love these . . .

Pupcakes and Pet Portraits

If you know me . . . you know of my love for furry faces. Much to the chagrin of my husband (who conveniently faked liking animals while we dated) we have our own little menagerie. This little zoo includes but is in no way is limited to Ginger, the couch-eating-Dalmatian and Buddy the Chi-? mix from Tijuana. They are both rescue pups who lived on the street and now rule our couch. We love them and can't imagine life without them. Even John (my husband) adores them . . . most of the time. He even enjoys their treats that are shaped like little realistic-looking cupcakes*, but I promised I would not blog or FB how he mistakenly consumed one of these recently, so don't bring it up if you bump into him ; )

A Bit of Sunshine in the City

We decided to do a session in downtown Fullerton. There are lots of cool walls and doorways where I like to shoot. Her mom said she was going to be shy and that it might take a while to get her to warm up. Little "S" didn't seem to have any problem with getting her portrait done. I'd say the warm up time was about 2.2 minutes at most. She was such an beautiful little girl and so sweet. This was one of the most fun photo shoots I've ever done. We kept right on going with wardrobe changes until we literally ran out of good light. Don't you just love her funky high tops with the urban background?

Cruising for a Cause

It's no secret that I'm a big animal lover. Additionally, I just turn to mush for big brown eyes of almost every kind. So this summer, I've donated a session/portrait package to the silent auction to benefit the Pacific Marine Mammal Center. The fundraiser is called the Sea Lion Sunset Cruise Fundraiser and it's a 3-hour harbor cruise that takes place on Thursday, July 23rd 2009 from 6-9pm aboard the Endeavor Yacht in Newport Beach. Mama's got a ring flash . . .

. . . Daddy can't sleep at night. Remember that old song? (Squeeze Box) OK, so it's really old. I got a new ring flash and I just had to tear it out of the box and start shooting right away. I bribed my resident model to do some quick posing for me. For the non-photo geeks - a ring flash is a circle of light that provides a soft even light on the subject. It's very distinct lighting and it's really fun for a change of pace. You see it in a lot of fashion mags. It provides a soft shadow that seems to envelope the subject. You can see it really well on the top images where my model is sitting near the background. It also makes a ring of light in the catch light in the eyes which you can see if you enlarge an image or if the close up is extreme. The bottom images were again just for fun and my little firecracker felt the need to jump for joy and for her country . . . of course. Happy 4th of July!!!!

Cuteness Comes in Three's

This summer I've been trying to convince some of my clients to get a jump on Christmas portraits. Here are some of my favorite shots from a session with three little cuties ages 6, 4 & 2. The funniest part of the day was chasing the little girl, around the park with my camera and trying to fire when she would pause briefly. I particularly like the shot of her looking over her shoulder at me . . . little diva!! The boys competed for my attention which was a total crack up. They would pose and try to get me to just photograph them alone. In typical boy fashion, they tried to outdo one another in every shot. When we tried to get them to pose together they would push and nudge each other right out of the shot. Too funny . . . some of the outtakes are absolutely hysterical. All in all, we got a ton of really adorable images and I was really liking the blues and greens set against all the dark foliage in the park. I liked the color combo so much, I went out and bought similarly colored outfits for my kiddos and as soon as there is a break in the summer action, I'm taking my own adorable clan out for a session.

Mama's Little Helper

Occasionally, I come across a book that makes me (and my kids) jump up and cheer. This little hunk 'o paper is worth it's weight in gold. My only regret is that I wish it would have come out sooner (and that I would have found it sooner. With many tips on how to handle boredom (inexpensively and without a lot of hoopla) in different situations, it can become a lifesaver for any mom or dad. It will now be one of my standard baby shower gifts and I think I need to buy a couple of copies and use them for a contest on my blog. Whaddya think? If you just gotta get it right away go to Amazon and pick it up pronto. BTW, this is not a paid advertisement. The photographer recommending this book (a.k.a. me) is not getting any kind of perk from recommending this book. I just had to tell all my mom/clients about it because it is oh so helpful. From one Supermom to another . . . live long and prosper.

Paramount Ranch

OK, so I've been reminded by a few folks, I'm behind in my blogging. I've been busy. Got a backlog of fun images to post. Just a couple of weeks ago, a photographer and friend, Jen May, organized a photo session at Paramount Ranch. What a fabulous spot to do a portrait session!!! Without too much convincing and bribery a friend agreed to make the trek with me to get her portraits done and I'm so glad she did. Not only is she incredibly beautiful, but her look just seemed to fit in with the whole country feel of the place. (although when you look like Olivia, you look good ANYWHERE and you make anywhere look good).

The ranch is a state park now, but many movies and TV shows have been filmed there over the years. Cute Little Sisters

Late last week I did a session with two very sweet little girls. In addition to their sweetness though, I got to get a glimpse at their budding personalities which is what I love to do. I wanted to break free from the typical "all pink" type of background and attire, so we went for bold use of color and a damask patterned background. I like mixing it up a bit and who could possibly strike out with such adorable faces as the subjects.

The baby was spunky and all about running the show. You can tell she had us all in the palm of her chubby little fingers. The Big Sister was smart, sensitive, reading each comment and situation and thinking it all through. While she was so very quick to smile and look exceedingly girly, there was this one "Mona Lisa" smile that summed up her personality so very well.

Zoee the "Doggee"

I love dogs! Love 'em. All kinds of dogs . . . mutts, pure breds, big, small, energetic and lethargic. We have two rescue doggies (Ginger, the couch eatin' Dal mix and Buddy the Chi-Terrier mix) and sometimes I get to "have over" a client doggie to photograph in the studio. It's very much like a play date and so much fun for me!! Yesterday I was able to combine two of my loves (dogs and photography) and we did a session with Miss Zoee. Now let me tell ya, Zoee is absolutely the funniest little dog I've ever met. She loves, loves, loves everyone and she has the cutest ears I've ever seen. Her parents were very nice also and they were oh so helpful in the studio (ya know, dishing out the doggie treats and all). Zoee is apparently very well loved. Fishing Derby

I have to admit that I'm not much of a fisherman and neither is my husband. We grew up in big cities where fish is served to you on a plate and you don't have any idea how it got from flipping around in the water to grilled with a mango relish. But somehow, we created a child who lives and breathes to fish. He talks about it constantly, watches it on TV and whenever he can, organizes a fishing trip (and gets us to accompany him). When I heard about the Fullerton Fishing Derby I rushed to sign us up. What a wonderful idea I thought . . . to get families out for a day of fishing together in the warm Southern California sun. So that is how we spent last Saturday . . . fishing and photographing. I think it was just about a perfect day.

Hats, Eggs, and Texture

So we are still in the sweet spot when it comes to holidays. The kids have not yet reached the age where hanging with your folks all day is boring beyond belief (I know that day will probably come). Easter is preceded by the the anticipation of getting out the tights, white gloves and bonnet and there are eggs to be colored and baskets to make. My son is not incredibly enthused at the thought of dressing up, but he is into hats, as long as I find him a cool hat, everything comes off without a hitch. This Easter we met our family, including tons of Scarsi cousins, at a restaurant that has some really interesting architecture and the light was warm and soft. I took this shot of my daughter and it begged me to add some texture . . . so here are the results. I feel a texture phase coming on . . . wait, is that a pun.

Fun with Pocket Wizards

So, it's Wednesday night and what are we doing at the Scarsi household . . . ? Trying out mom's new Pocket Wizard cable. I got my Pocket Wizards so that I could go wireless in the studio. Recently, I got a request from Scarsi Clan to do a family portrait on Easter Sunday. Yep, the whole dressed up, child laden posse. So I started to think about how I could pull this off without having to buy another expensive piece of equipment (or hiring a monkey to hit the shutter release). So I bought a motor drive cable for about $90 and voila. I can shoot and be in the family portrait too!!! I love my Pocket Wizards and I want a few more of them. Camera equipment is very much like shoes . . . you never seem to have enough.

Sophia was very impressed that she could fire the camera herself with the Wizard and thought it would be a great idea if she held one while Buddy (the slick little canine on the left) held the other. She is quite the little creative director.

Brothers & Uncles

It's funny . . . you can go your whole life picking up friends, lovers, business partners and spouses and even children, but your siblings will always be privy to a part of you that only they can know. You grew up together. You shared the experience of your first family. It's a unique one and one you continue to learn about your entire life. This is my brother . . . well, one of them. I still call him Bobby but I don't think anyone else does. He's a character and while I say that lovingly, he does follow a different drummer . . . and he's not shy about it. He's a lot like our dad and every time I see him I rediscover some "Dadism" I'd forgotten about. (Dad died in '91) My kids adore him because he's so goofy with them. He has spent the last dozen years in Asia travelling and teaching. It's an interesting life and he certainly has some interesting stories to tell.

Curly Top

Isn't he dreamy. This is one of my many nephews. Yes, the Scarsi clan has an overwhelming tendency to produce boy children. This little guy is lil' John. He's the baby of the bunch (at least so far - see the previous post) and the ONLY one with curly hair. You just want to tousle his hair pretty much non-stop . . . at least I do. Yesterday, we were all at G&G's house (grama & grampa's house) and I chased John around with my 70-200mm, f2.8 lens so that I could get the cool bokeh (creamy out of focus background) looking the way I did. Don't try this at home though . . . really long, really heavy, really expensive zoom lenses and two-year olds are not an easy combo to work with. But there are very few things I love more than chasing children around with cameras . . . sigh . . . so for me it's pure fun. The results are pretty cool too.

The Other Man

I'm a happily married woman. I have a great husband and two beautiful children. I should be grateful for what I have and should NOT go looking for trouble. But . . . recently on a sunny morning, I flirted shamelessly with another man. A younger and very handsome man. Oh, I couldn't help myself he was just my type . . . big brown eyes, a quick smile and the most wonderful thighs you've ever seen.

His name is Gavin and he's 9 months old. Oh, I'm not the only girl he's cooed at. There are many others, I'm sure. But, I know the moments we had together (me behind the camera and him in front of it) will be special to me always.

The Little Cowboy

Been rustling up some cowboys. Little ones. Couldn't you just squeeze those cheeks . . . and he is such a patient model too. He is just one of those kids who gives you a range of emotion without much need for direction. But that is the way I like to create children's portraits. None of that "do this, look here and smile" stuff really works well when you are trying to capture their soul. Just let them be "them" and wait until they have that certain look that is just very simply who they really are.

The Wannabe Flower Girl

About three years ago we packed up the kids and drove North. One of my husband's cousins and his gorgeous bride had the most beautiful wedding in Napa. The ceremony was out in the vineyards, the bride and groom were swaddled in soft, warm light. It was a picturesque day and a day and a wedding where everything in the world seemed just right. Until . . . it . . . happened. My then, three-year-old daughter realized that some other cute little tart got the staring toddler role in this amazing production. This role, in her three-year-old mind, had somehow been stolen from her like a teddy bear ripped from her arms. She was pissed!

It didn't matter that there were many toddler girls in the family that were vying for the Flower Girl role. It didn't matter that up until that day we hadn't even met the bride (or maybe just barely at the previous family wedding - not sure, I'd had a bit of wine). It didn't matter that there were several other little girls, all cut from the staring role themselves, who had gotten over it and were dancing the night away. What mattered right then was that some other little fancy-dressed, pearly-shoed, up-doed little chick was getting a lion's share of the attention, ooh's and ahhh's and she, my daughter, of three years, was not. Like I said . . . she was pissed.

The only way I could coax her back into a somewhat reasonable state was to tell her that there would be another wedding and surely she would be a Flower Girl at that one. Well, there was another wedding, and eeeek, somehow another starlet edged out my daughter. Then another wedding and another and each time my daughter, now six, wanted to know WHEN she would get the coveted FG role.

OK, so now that I'm doing more wedding photography and there are Flower Girl photos on my computer and issues of OC Bride and Ceremony magazine strewn about the house, we've come to a fork in the road. My daughter informed me that if she did not get the chance to play FG she was gonna walk. Alright, so she didn't put it exactly that way, but I knew I needed to act and act fast because there is nothing worse than the wounded ego of a six-year-old, princess-type, girl.

I consulted iCal and last weekend I booked a day for one of my most important pee-wee clients. We had already picked up the dress at Nordstrom and purchased matching big-girl shoes. We spent the morning at a real salon (Cool Cuts wouldn't do on a day like this). We got a mani and luckily I was able to convince her that a pedi was just not necessary in closed toed shoes (and it wasn't an easy sell). We skipped into the florist shop (with FG dress in plastic) so that we could match the colors of the roses petals perfectly. Then when all the preparations were complete, I packed my little diva and my camera bag in my car and off to the arboretum we went for a FG photo shoot. Needless to say when the part comes up again she'll have her head shots ready to go.

Insurance - gotta get it man

Ok, this post is just for some of my photographer friends so all others just skip this one. I know it's one of those pesky little business management things but ya gotta get insurance. If for no other reason, just so that you don't have to keep looking over your shoulder at a wedding to see if your equipment is still there.

I have a great policy and it was a totally painless process (OK, mostly painless). The company I went with is Hill & Usher. They have a special photography business program and they were recommended to me by WPPI so you know they know our business. The cost will totally depend on how much coverage you get and how much equipment you are insuring. I think I was actually able to get a preliminary quote online. One catch is that you need to put together a detailed list of the equipment you have . . . so dig out all your crap and jot down serial numbers and model numbers.

Last weekend I needed to do a portrait of a scientist. He works with lasers, formulas and lots of very expensive looking equipment. What interested me most about him was his passion for science and things I can only grasp a tiny bit about. I should have paid more attention in my college physics class . . .

I had a great time shooting a wedding with photographer Jackie Lovato. Thanks Jackie for inviting me to shoot with you. That whole wedding party was so much fun to hang out with. It was incredibly hot on her wedding day but the bride, Rita, looked cool as a cucumber. (maybe because the really nerve wrecking part, the ceremony, was out of the way).

I loved Rita's veil so I hope she didn't mind me making her play with it for a few shots. I like this one with her bouquet in the background.
